Myrcene is the most common terpene in cannabis. What it smells like, where else it shows up, and what the research does and does not establish.

Myrcene — usually written beta-myrcene on a lab report — is the terpene that shows up most often, and often in the largest amount, in commercial cannabis.
What it is
Myrcene is a small aromatic hydrocarbon produced in the same glandular trichomes that produce cannabinoids. It is not unique to cannabis: it is a major component of hops, and it appears in mango, lemongrass, bay leaves, and thyme.
The smell is the earthy, slightly musky, herbal note that people often describe as the baseline "cannabis" smell — partly because myrcene is so frequently the dominant compound that its scent reads as the default.
What you will see on a COA
Myrcene is dominant in a large share of commercial flower. Analyses of commercial cannabis have repeatedly found it as the most abundant terpene across a wide range of samples.
On a typical flower report you might see myrcene anywhere from 0.1% to over 1%. Against a total terpene content commonly between 0.5% and 3%, myrcene at 0.8% is doing most of the aromatic work in that jar. Myrcene at 0.05% is present but incidental.
Because it is so common, myrcene is not usually the interesting part of a profile on its own. What tends to distinguish one batch from another is what sits alongside it — and in what ratio. A myrcene-dominant batch with meaningful limonene is a different product from a myrcene-dominant batch with meaningful caryophyllene.

What the research does and does not show
Myrcene carries more folklore than any other terpene, and it is worth being precise about where that folklore came from.
Two claims circulate widely. The first is that myrcene is sedating; the second is that it increases the permeability of the blood-brain barrier and therefore intensifies THC. Both trace back to a small number of studies — largely in rodents, using isolated myrcene at doses far above what is present in cannabis, and often administered in ways that do not resemble how anyone consumes it.
Those studies are real, and the hypotheses are not unreasonable. But the leap from "isolated myrcene did something measurable in a mouse at high dose" to "0.9% myrcene in this jar will make your evening go a particular way" is a large one, and the evidence does not currently support it.
The broader idea that terpenes and cannabinoids interact to shape the overall experience — the entourage effect — is plausible and actively researched. It is also not settled, and the specific compound-to-outcome mappings that circulate as established fact are mostly extrapolation.
How to actually find out
The useful question is not what myrcene does in general. It is whether myrcene content is associated with anything in your sessions.
That question is answerable, but only from your own record, and only with enough of it. A few things make the answer trustworthy rather than accidental:
- Enough sessions. Two myrcene-heavy evenings that went well is a coincidence you have not tested.
- Enough different products. If every myrcene-dominant batch you logged came from the same producer, you may be learning about that producer.
- Noting the rest of it. Dose, format, time of day, and what else was in the profile all sit between the chemistry and the outcome.
Log the sessions, note what the COA said, and let it accumulate. If something holds up across a dozen sessions and several products, that is worth something. If it does not, that is also worth knowing — and it is more than the folklore can tell you.
