Linalool is the terpene cannabis shares with lavender. It is one of the most recognisable compounds in the plant and, on most lab reports, one of the smallest numbers.
What it is
Linalool is a floral alcohol found in lavender, coriander, birch, and several hundred other plants. It is used heavily in perfumery and in soaps and detergents, which is why the smell reads as familiar even to people who have never thought about terpenes.
In cannabis it contributes a soft floral, faintly spicy note that sits underneath sharper compounds rather than dominating them.
What you will see on a COA
This is the part worth calibrating expectations on: linalool is usually present in small quantities, commonly in the 0.05% to 0.3% range, and it is rarely the dominant terpene in a profile.
Against a total terpene content of 1–2%, linalool at 0.1% is a real but minor component. Batches reporting linalool above 0.3% exist and are notable, but they are not the norm.

What the research does and does not show
Lavender's reputation is old and cross-cultural, and there is a real research literature on lavender essential oil and on isolated linalool, including some human work in aromatherapy contexts.
The problem in applying it to cannabis is dose. The studies that report measurable effects generally use isolated linalool or concentrated lavender oil at quantities that are orders of magnitude above the 0.1% present in a gram of flower. Extrapolating from one to the other is a much bigger step than most writing on the subject acknowledges.
There is also a question nobody has answered well about what survives combustion or vaporisation and actually reaches you, which applies to every terpene but bites hardest on the ones present in trace amounts.
So: linalool is well-studied as a compound, and poorly studied at the concentrations cannabis contains. The confident claims that circulate about what linalool in cannabis does are not supported by evidence at those levels.
Tracking it yourself
Because linalool is usually a minor component, it is a harder thing to isolate in your own record than something dominant. That is worth knowing before you start looking for it.
If you do want to track it, the things that make the answer meaningful are the same as for any terpene, and they matter more here because the signal is smaller:
- Note the actual percentage, not just whether it was present. Presence at trace level and presence at 0.3% are not the same observation.
- Log enough sessions and enough different products that a pattern has to survive some variety.
- Note what dominated the profile, since a minor compound rarely acts alone and whatever was at 1% is a more likely explanation for anything you notice.
The realistic expectation is that a trace terpene will be hard to attribute anything to from your own data, and an honest record will tell you that rather than manufacturing a pattern to fill the gap.
