CBN
CBN is what THC becomes with age, which makes it a freshness signal on a lab report. Also the compound whose sleep reputation rests on the thinnest evidence in the plant.

CBN is the cannabinoid that appears when cannabis gets old, and it has been marketed harder than almost any compound in the plant on the strength of very little evidence.
What it is
Cannabinol is C₂₁H₂₆O₂, and it is not primarily something the plant makes. It is what THC turns into as it oxidises — exposed to air, light, and time. A freshly cured jar contains very little. An old one contains more, and contains correspondingly less THC.
It is mildly intoxicating. CBN interacts with the same CB1 and CB2 receptors THC does, at considerably lower potency, and other targets are still being mapped.
It can also be produced or isolated deliberately, which is why it now appears in products as a headline ingredient rather than as a sign of age.
What you will see on a COA
CBN is usually a small number, and its most useful property is what it implies about everything else on the report.
Elevated CBN in flower is a freshness signal. It correlates with older or oxidised material, because that is where it comes from. A batch with unusually high CBN relative to its category is telling you something about how it was stored and how long it sat — information the packaging is unlikely to volunteer.

In deliberately formulated products — tinctures, gummies, minor-cannabinoid blends — CBN content is a formulation choice and carries no such implication. Read it differently depending on which kind of product you are holding.
What the research does and does not show
CBN is sold overwhelmingly as a sleep compound. That association is worth examining closely, because it is unusually thin.
The reputation appears to trace largely to early work on aged cannabis, where sedative properties were attributed to material that happened to be high in CBN — material that had also degraded in other ways. Later attempts to demonstrate that isolated CBN produces sedation in humans have not established the effect. Reviews of cannabinoids and sleep tend to conclude that the evidence for CBN specifically is weak.
The human pharmacokinetics are also poorly characterised. CBN's half-life in humans is not well established, and its metabolism is less studied than THC's or CBD's.
So: a mildly intoxicating compound, with an outcome claim built on an attribution error, sold at a premium on the strength of that claim. It may yet turn out to do something. The current evidence does not show it.
How to actually find out
CBN is a good test case for treating a marketing claim as a hypothesis.
If you want to know whether it does anything for you:
- Distinguish the two sources. CBN from an aged jar arrives alongside degraded THC and depleted terpenes. CBN in a formulated product arrives on its own terms. These are not the same input and should not share a comparison.
- Record the dose in milligrams for formulated products, and the percentage for flower.
- Expect expectation to interfere. Few compounds carry a stronger prior than "the sleep cannabinoid". That is precisely why a record beats an impression.
- Give it enough sessions and enough products that a pattern has to survive some variety before you believe it.
If CBN content tracks something in your own sessions across enough entries, that is a finding worth having — and notably more than the products making the claim can currently point to.
