Why the same strain can feel different
Two jars with the same name on the label can carry very different chemistry. Here is where that variation comes from and what to look at instead.

You bought Blue Dream in March and it was one of the better sessions you have had. You bought Blue Dream again in July, from a different producer, and it was unremarkable.
Nothing went wrong. You bought two different products that share a name.
A strain name is not a specification
In most other categories, a product name is attached to a controlled recipe. In cannabis it is closer to a family name than a formula. There is no central registry, no enforcement, and no requirement that a plant sold under a given name is genetically what that name implies.
Studies that have sequenced commercial cannabis have repeatedly found samples sharing a strain name that were not closely related to each other, and samples with different names that were nearly identical. The naming layer and the genetics layer came apart a long time ago.
So the first source of variation is simply that the two jars may not have contained the same plant.
Even the same plant varies
Suppose the genetics really are identical. You would still expect the chemistry to differ between harvests.
Cannabinoid and terpene production responds to growing conditions — light intensity and spectrum, temperature, nutrients, and especially when the plant was harvested. A few days' difference in harvest timing measurably shifts the ratio of compounds in the finished flower.
Then there is what happens after the harvest. Terpenes are volatile: they evaporate. Drying temperature, cure length, storage temperature, light exposure, and time on the shelf all reduce terpene content, and they do not reduce every terpene at the same rate. A jar that sat warm for eight months is chemically different from the same batch tested fresh, in ways the label does not mention.
This is why two batches from the same producer, under the same name, can report noticeably different numbers.
Indica and sativa describe a shape, not an effect
The indica/sativa split is the other piece of shorthand that carries more weight than it can hold. Those terms originally described plant morphology — how the plant grows, what its leaves look like — and after decades of hybridisation almost everything commercially available is a hybrid anyway.
The correlation between that label and how a product is experienced is weak enough that it is not a reliable basis for a purchase. It persists because it is easy to put on a shelf tag.
What actually distinguishes two products
The lab report. Specifically:
- The terpene profile — which compounds are present and in what proportion. This is where two same-named jars diverge most visibly. See what terpene percentages actually mean.
- The full cannabinoid panel, not just total THC. Two products at 24% THC can carry quite different amounts of CBG, CBN, and CBC.

Two jars labelled Blue Dream with different terpene profiles are, for any practical purpose, two different products. Two jars with different names and near-identical profiles have more in common than either name suggests.
The part that is genuinely about you
Chemistry explains why the products differed. It does not, on its own, explain your experience of them — and it would be overselling the science to pretend otherwise.
Dose, tolerance, method of consumption, time of day, whether you had eaten, what else was happening that week, and your own physiology all sit between the contents of the jar and how the evening went. Any one of those can matter more than the terpene profile did.
Which is why a single comparison never settles anything. One good session and one flat session is two data points and a lot of noise.
What to do instead
Stop shopping by name and start shopping by profile — then check the profile against your own record.
That means noting what was actually in the products you liked, noting what was in the ones you did not, and giving it enough sessions that a pattern has a chance to show up or fail to. Something that repeats across a dozen sessions and several different products is worth acting on. Something that happened twice is a coincidence you have not tested yet.
The question worth answering is not "which strain is best." It is "what did my better sessions have in common" — and that one is answerable, but only from your own history.
