How to read a cannabis COA
A certificate of analysis tells you what is actually in the jar. Here is how to read one section by section, and which numbers are worth your attention.

A certificate of analysis — everyone calls it a COA — is the lab report for the specific batch of cannabis you bought. It is the most factual document attached to any cannabis product, and almost nobody reads past the THC number.
That is a shame, because the COA is the only place that tells you what was actually in the jar rather than what the marketing says about the strain.
Where to find it
Most licensed products carry a QR code on the package or the label. Scanning it should take you to a PDF from a third-party testing lab. If the code takes you to a brand's homepage rather than a document with a lab's letterhead on it, you have a marketing page, not a COA.
If there is no code, the dispensary can usually pull the report for the batch. It is a reasonable thing to ask for.
The header: does this document describe your product?
Before reading any numbers, confirm the report belongs to what you are holding. Check three things:
- The batch or lot number on the report matches the one printed on your package. This is the single most common mismatch, and it matters — a different batch of the same strain is a different set of numbers.
- The sample date, which tells you how old the analysis is. Terpene content declines with time and heat, so a report from fourteen months ago describes the batch less well than one from last month.
- The lab's name and license, which should be a testing facility independent of the producer.
If the batch numbers do not match, the rest of the document is describing someone else's cannabis.
The cannabinoid panel
This is the section people already look at, usually for one line of it.
You will typically see both THCA and delta-9 THC listed separately. Raw cannabis contains mostly THCA, which converts to delta-9 THC when heated. That is why the "Total THC" figure is not simply the two added together — labs apply a conversion factor of roughly 0.877 to the THCA before summing, because the molecule loses mass in the process.
The same pattern applies to CBDA and CBD.
Below the headline pair, a full panel usually lists CBG, CBN, CBC, and THCV in smaller amounts. These are usually under one percent, and they are frequently the difference between two products with an identical THC number.
A "total cannabinoids" line at the bottom is worth noting. A product at 22% total THC and 24% total cannabinoids is a different thing from one at 22% total THC and 30% total cannabinoids.
The terpene panel
This is the half of the report that gets ignored, and it is where two jars bearing the same strain name diverge most.
You will see individual terpenes listed with a percentage or a mg/g figure, and usually a total terpene content at the bottom. In flower, total terpenes commonly land somewhere between 0.5% and 3%. The specific compounds — myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, linalool, pinene, terpinolene and others — appear in descending order of concentration.
The top two or three terpenes are the ones worth noting. Anything below about 0.1% is present, but it is a trace.
Not every product is tested for terpenes. Terpene analysis is optional in many markets, and plenty of COAs skip it entirely. When it is absent, you are working with less information — which is worth knowing rather than guessing around.

The safety panels
The back half of a COA is the part that determines whether the batch could be sold at all. You will find screens for pesticides, residual solvents (relevant for concentrates and vapes), heavy metals, microbials, and mycotoxins.
Each line reads Pass, Fail, or ND — not detected. The useful habit here is simply confirming every panel says Pass. A batch that failed should not be on a shelf, but the presence of a complete, passing safety panel is a meaningful signal about the producer.
Concentrates and vape products deserve a closer look at residual solvents than flower does, since flower is not solvent-extracted in the first place.
What a COA does not tell you
It does not tell you how the product will affect you.
A lab report is a description of chemistry, not a prediction about a person. Two people can consume identical material from the same jar and describe completely different experiences, and the research on which compounds are associated with which effects is genuinely early — much of what circulates online is extrapolated from studies of isolated compounds in non-human models, at concentrations that have little to do with what is in your jar.
So the honest use of a COA is not "this batch is 1.2% myrcene, therefore I will feel sedated." It is "this batch is 1.2% myrcene — I will note that alongside how the session actually went, and see whether anything repeats."
Building the habit
The practical version of all this is short:
- Scan the code, confirm the batch number matches.
- Note total THC, and glance at the minor cannabinoids.
- Note the top two or three terpenes and the total terpene content.
- Confirm the safety panels pass.
- Write it down somewhere you will still have it in three months.
That last step is the one that turns a lab report into something useful. A single COA tells you about one jar. A record of twenty of them, set against how each session actually went, starts to tell you about yourself.
