THC:CBD ratios explained
How to read the ratio on a package, what balanced and high-CBD products mean in practice, and why total cannabinoid content matters alongside it.

A THC:CBD ratio on a package is a compact way of saying what the two headline cannabinoids are doing relative to each other. It is useful shorthand, and it leaves out more than most people realise.
How to read the notation
A ratio is written with THC first unless labelled otherwise. 1:1 means roughly
equal parts. 1:20 means twenty times as much CBD as THC. 20:1 is the
reverse.
The convention is not perfectly consistent between producers, so it is worth confirming against the actual numbers on the lab report rather than trusting the ordering on the front of the package.
Common categories you will see:
- THC-dominant — most adult-use flower, with CBD often below the limit of detection.
- Balanced, around 1:1 — deliberately bred or blended.
- CBD-dominant, from roughly 1:5 up to 1:30 or beyond.
The number the ratio hides
A ratio is a proportion, not a quantity. This is the single most common way people misread it.
A 1:1 product at 3% THC and 3% CBD, and a 1:1 product at 15% THC and 15% CBD, have identical ratios and are not remotely the same thing. The ratio tells you the shape of the product; the total cannabinoid content tells you the scale.

Acid forms, and why the arithmetic is odd
Raw cannabis contains mostly THCA and CBDA — acid precursors that convert to THC and CBD when heated.
This is why a lab report's "Total THC" is not just THCA plus delta-9 THC. Labs apply a conversion factor of about 0.877 to the THCA before adding, because the molecule sheds a carboxyl group and loses mass in the process. The same applies to CBDA and CBD.
The practical consequence: an edible or a tincture, already decarboxylated, delivers close to the stated total. Flower delivers something less than its listed total, varying with how completely it was heated.
What is left out entirely
A THC:CBD ratio describes two compounds. A lab report describes several dozen.
Missing from the ratio:
- The minor cannabinoids — CBG, CBN, CBC, THCV — usually present under 1% each, and frequently the difference between two products with matching headline numbers.

What the evidence supports
CBD and THC clearly interact — that much is established. CBD has been shown in controlled human studies to modulate some of THC's subjective effects, and the direction of that interaction appears to depend on dose and on the ratio itself. This is one of the better-evidenced interactions in the plant.
What has not been established is a reliable map from a specific ratio to a specific outcome for a specific person. The research is real but the effect sizes vary, the study designs vary, and individual response varies a great deal.
Anyone telling you that a particular ratio produces a particular result with confidence is ahead of the evidence.
Finding your own answer
Ratio is one of the easier things to track, because it is printed plainly and varies in a well-defined way.
If you want to know how ratio relates to your own sessions, the record needs to support the question:
- Note the ratio and the totals, since the two together describe the product and either alone does not.
- Note the format — inhaled and ingested cannabis behave differently enough that mixing them in one comparison muddies it.
- Give it enough sessions and enough products that an apparent pattern has to survive some variety.
Ratio is a genuinely useful axis to explore, and it is one where your own data can give you a clearer answer than the literature currently can — because the literature is describing averages across people, and you are not an average.
