What terpene percentages actually mean
Total terpene content, individual percentages, and what counts as high. A plain-language guide to the second half of the lab report.

The terpene panel on a lab report is a list of compounds with small numbers next to them. Here is how to read those numbers without over-reading them.
The units
Terpenes are reported either as a percentage by weight or in mg/g. They are the same measurement in different clothes: 1% is 10 mg/g. If a report uses mg/g, divide by ten to get the percentage.
You will also see LOQ or LOD — limit of quantitation and limit of detection. A result below the LOQ means the lab could tell something was there but not measure it reliably. ND means not detected at all.
What counts as a lot
For cannabis flower, total terpene content usually lands between 0.5% and 3%.
As a rough orientation:
- Below 1% total is on the low side, often a sign of a long cure, a warm shelf, or simply age.
- 1–2% total is the broad middle where most flower sits.
- Above 2% total is genuinely aromatic, and above 3% is uncommon.
For any individual terpene, 0.5% is a substantial presence and anything above 1% is dominant. Compounds sitting at 0.05% are real but are unlikely to be doing much next to something ten times their size.
Concentrates run higher across the board — often 2–10% total terpenes, occasionally more for live resin and similar formats — because the extraction concentrates everything. Comparing a concentrate's terpene percentages directly against flower's is comparing two different scales.
Read the ratios, not just the totals
Total terpene content tells you how aromatic something is. The proportions tell you what kind of product it is.
A batch at 1.8% total that is two-thirds myrcene is a different product from a batch at 1.8% total split evenly between limonene, caryophyllene, and pinene — even though the totals match and both would sit in the same place on a shelf tag.
The useful habit is to note the top two or three terpenes by concentration along with the total. That is usually enough to characterise a batch, and it is little enough to actually write down every time.
Where the numbers came from
Two things are worth knowing about how these figures are produced.
First, the sample is not your jar. Labs test a small sample drawn from a larger batch, and cannabis is not homogeneous — different plants, different positions on the same plant, and different parts of the same package vary. The number on the report is a reasonable estimate of the batch, not a measurement of what you are holding.
Second, the number was true on the test date. Terpenes evaporate. Heat, light, oxygen, and time all reduce them, at different rates for different compounds. A report from a year ago describes a batch that has since lost some of what it was measured for.
Neither of these makes the report useless. They make it an estimate with a known direction of error, which is more than most of what surrounds cannabis.
What the percentages do not establish
There is a large body of writing online that maps individual terpenes to specific effects with a confidence the evidence does not support.
Most of that work traces back to studies of isolated compounds — frequently in animal models, frequently at concentrations far above what appears in cannabis, and frequently by routes of administration that have nothing to do with how anyone consumes it. The "entourage effect," the idea that terpenes and cannabinoids interact to shape the overall experience, is a plausible and actively researched hypothesis. It is not settled science, and the specific compound-to-outcome mappings that circulate as fact are mostly extrapolation.
So a terpene percentage is a real, measured property of a product. What it will do for a particular person is a separate question, and the honest answer to it is that nobody can tell you in advance.
Making the numbers useful
The value of a terpene panel compounds when you keep them.
One report is a description. Fifteen reports, each attached to a note about how that session actually went, is a dataset about you — and it is the only dataset that can answer whether limonene-forward products are associated with your better afternoons, or whether that idea came from a blog post.
Note the top terpenes and the total, note how it went, and let the record accumulate. Give it enough sessions and enough different products that a pattern has to survive some variety before you believe it.
